The Possible Role of Hydrogen in Stress Corrosion Cracking of Titanium Alloys

چکیده

The various mechanisms that have been put forward to explain stress-corrosion cracking are briefly summarized. The experimental observations of stress-corrosion cracking in titanium alloys in widely different environmer a are discussed. Evidence from the literature for and against the possibility that hydrogen plays a role in the stress-corrosion cracking of titanium alloys is documented. An experimental approach is outlined in an attempt to establish if environmental cracking in titanium alloys in specific environments is due mainly to a stress-corrosion mechanism or to a process similar to hydrogen embrittlement.

ROLES OF HzS IN THE BEHAVIOR OF ENGINEERING ALLOYS: A REVIEW OF LITERATURE AND EXPERIENCE

Hydrogen sulfide (H$) has long been associated with the cause of corrosion damage and sulfide stress cracking (SSC) in high strength steels and high hardness weldments used in oil and gas production, petroleum refining, and petrochemical/chemical processing. Other applications where sulfide species have produced environmental cracking include heavy water production, electric power, marine appli...

Effect of Hydrogen on Corrosion and Stress Corrosion Cracking of AZ91 Alloy in Aqueous Solutions

The effect of hydrogen on the corrosion and stress corrosion cracking of the magnesium AZ91 alloy has been investigated in aqueous solutions. Hydrogen produced by corrosion in water diffuses into, and reacts with the Mg matrix to form hydride. Some of the hydrogen accumulates at hydride/Mg matrix (or secondary phase) interfaces as a consequence of slow hydride formation and the incompatibility ...

Dealloying and Stress Corrosion Craking of Copper Alloys in Cu(I) Solutions

Natural cases of dealloying or stress-corrosion cracking in copper alloys normally occur in oxygenated solutions, where the cathodic reactant is O2 or Cu2+. Within cavities or under deposits, the local environment is enriched in cuprous ions (e.g. CuCl2-, Cu (NH3)2+) and the potential is close to the Cu/Cu+ equilibrium. Such conditions can be simulated macroscopically by stirring powdered Cu2O ...

IMPROVING THE WELDABILITY OF FeCrAl ALLOYS THROUGH TiC ADDITIONS

FeCrAl alloys were prepared with TiC additions to act as hydrogen traps and improve resistance to hydrogen cracking. Weldability results showed that alloys with up to 20 wt% Al and 11 wt% Cr could be prepared crack-free with relatively small TiC additions of ~ 4 wt%. Thermogravimetric analysis of Fe-10Al-5Cr corrosion coupons with and without TiC has shown that the corrosion resistance is not s...
